One webmaster even commented on the Pissed Consumer report that was being used in “slamming blogs with auto-posted spam”. The webmaster describes how this link was used 13 times in spam comments in less than one hour to their blog.

Legitimate consumer complaints usually don’t see linking like this as users will post what they have to say and be done with the issue. However when a company is being attacked with false complaints to cause harm it is not unusual for the complaint to have multiple links from a variety of sources.  When the attacker is a company who offers online reputation mangement services themsevles you can be sure they know how to create links aimed at creating maxium damage.

When under attack one might want to contact the blogs being used to link to the false complaints. However this isn’t necessarily part of the best practices of ORM.

Consider:

  • Blogs don’t always post contact information.
  • There can be thousands of comments on thousands of blogs across the web.
  • The comments might not pass their link love.
  • The blogs could be part of a network that belongs to the attacker.

The best practice here is to own the top 10 with strong relevant sites and be completely transparent about the attack and issues of the brand. Visit our page on ORM best practices.

  1. Owning the top 10 with relevant sites, such as company name scam, company name fake, is a good idea. Contacting the blogs does not always help. A lot of spammers are in different countries and do not provide real webmaster emails.
